Our Purpose
The music program in the local church is crucial, and its impact on a church service is vast. While some people may view music as simply a form of entertainment and emotional conditioning, godly music plays a much larger role in a church.
Scripture gives us, at least, seven purposes for Christ-honoring music. We want to use these main beliefs as a measure to evaluate the biblical soundness of our music ministry:
- The Purpose of Worship — “The whole assembly bowed in worship, while the musicians played and the trumpets sounded. All this continued until the sacrifice of the burnt offering was completed.” (2 Chronicles 29:28)
- The Purpose of Thanks — “Sing to the LORD with grateful praise; make music to our God on the harp”.(Psalm 147:7)
- The Purpose of Rejoicing — “Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing.” (Psalm 98:4-5)
- The Purpose of Consecration — “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” (Psalm139:23)
- The Purpose of Edification — “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” (Colossians 3:16)
- The Purpose of Evangelism — “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD
and put their trust in him.” (Psalm 40:3) - The Purpose of Preservation of Faith — “One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty— and I will meditate on your wonderful works” (Psalm 145:4-5)
May the salvation through the blood of Jesus be the subject and the meditation of your heart.
